La mostra (Lugano, giugno 1993) presenta una selezione di settanta dipinti buddisti del XII e XIII secolo, ritrovati all'inizio del Novecento dalla Società Geografica Imperiale Russa nella stufa sepolcrale della Città Nera, ora scomparsa, che si trovava lungo la Via della Seta nell'Asia Centrale. I dipinti, eccezionalmente ben conservati, costituiscono il nucleo più prezioso della sezione di arte orientale del museo dell'Ermitage.
