Description : Madonna orante
Oil on canvas. An impressive copy of the 'Madonna Orante' by Giovan Battista Salvi called 'Il Sassoferrato'. This painting has countless copies: one is held at the National Gallery in London, another version in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, one at the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco in Milan and another in the museum of Todi. The high number of copies and reproductions made more recently, such as ours, proves the success that had (and still has) the image of the young Virgin in prayer. With an absorbed look and the face humbly lowered, she is depicted with elementary colors (white, red and blue) and with delicate shades on the face and the hands. The original versions was made by Guido Reni and it spread by Jean Baron's engraving of this painting, on which Sassoferrato based his composition. The painting, restored and relined, is presented in a frame with tympanum of the late 1800s, Renaissance style, carved and gilded with grotesque representations. The back of the frame is covered and partially reconstructed with antique wood (17th century).
