Additional Information

Artist: Arturo Tosi (1871-1956)

Arturo Tosi, born in Busto Arsizio in 1871, was one of the protagonists of Italian painting in the first half of the twentieth century. After having gone through, during his youth, a season characterized by an original component of signs and materials which he himself defined as the "alcoholic period", Tosi approached Novecento Italiano in 1922, founded that year by Sironi, Funi and other artists, gathered around to the critic Margherita Sarfatti. Within the movement, of which he became a member of the Steering Committee, Tosi represented the wing closest to the nineteenth-century tradition. His fluid and pasty brushstroke and his landscape inspiration are linked to a pictorial school that from Fontanesi and Piccio reaches Scapigliatura and Gola, representing almost a link between the twentieth and nineteenth centuries. From 1909 the artist regularly participated in the Venice Biennale. In 1931 he won the Painting Prize at the Rome Quadrennial. The major critics were interested in him, from Waldemar George (who published one of his important monographs in Paris in 1933) to Argan, from Giolli to Margherita Sarfatti, from Diego Valeri to Carrieri, from Savinio to Lamberto Vitali. Tosi died in Milan in 1956.
