Oil on canvas. Michelangelo Cerquozzi (1602-1660), also called Michelangelo delle Bambocciate, was famous for his genre scenes and he was part of the Bamboccianti, a group of genre painters active in Rome. Pieter Van Laer was the major spokesperson of the group. The group of artists used to portray popular scenes of daily life in Rome, with particular attention to the people living on the outskirts as sycophants, thieves, gamblers, prostitutes and beggars. In the depicted scene, which is set in a dark inn, there are three figures sat behind a low table. They are resting and depicted in all their poorness. The old man is drinking some wine, while his dog is staring at him. The younger man and woman are entertaining themselves. The only source of light is the open door. Behind the door, a rural landscape is depicted. Restored, it is presented in gilded frame of the 19th century. 17th century.
