Additional Information

Artist: Lorenzo Gignous (1862-1958)

Born in Modena in 1862, brother of the painter Eugenio Gignous, Lorenzo trained at the Brera Academy in Milan, attending the school of ornamentation from 1876 and, from 1880, the school of perspective and landscape. Lorenzo Gignous began exhibiting in Milan and Florence from 1880, later participating in numerous national exhibitions. He achieved moderate success with works such as Sesto Calende with which he obtained, in 1884, the Mylius prize for historical landscape at the annual Brera Exhibition, but also thanks to a large series of landscapes, in line with the tradition of Lombard naturalism. He made a name for himself above all for the views of Lake Maggiore, painted during his stays in Stresa with his brother Eugenio, who lived here with his family. Lorenzo combined his pictorial activity with his employment at the State Railways, which also allowed him to obtain important commissions for public works. His works are kept at the Modern Art Gallery of Milan, the Giannoni of Novara and the Ricci Oddi of Piacenza. He died in Porto Ceresio in 1958.
