Description : Ritratto di popolana
Oil on canvas. Large dimension, the intense and expressive portrait depicts a young woman from the lower-class in her traditional dress typical of Central Italy, like the rugged mountain landscape behind her. On the back there are some names referring to the collections the painting comes from, with the inventory number. Among them, the family Spech of Milan, ascribed to the Hungarian nobility by Empress Maria Teresa in 1754 thanks to the eminent services secured to the Crown of Hungary by one of the brothers as imperial commissioner of war in Lombardy. The painting is restored with signs of tears and patches on the back. It is presented in coeval frame gilded anew. Mid 19th century.
