Description : La testa di Ciro portata alla Regina Tomiri

Oil painting on canvas. The work is from the copper engraving made in 1630 by P. Pontius which reproduces with reversed sides the painting made approximately in 1622-1623 by Pieter Paul Rubens preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The depicted scene refers to the revenge of Tomyris, Massagetean queen who reigned over the Iranian people. After defeating Cyrus the Great, she immersed his head into a bucket of blood while saying 'satia te sanguine, quem sitisti' (satisfy yourself with the blood you were thirsty of) to punish the ferocity the Persians showed over her people. Dante mentioned Tomyris in the first terrace of Purgatory to punish the Persian king's pride. The painting has some color losses. It is presented in beautiful gilded frame of the late 1800s. 18th century.
