Description : Cavalieri

Mixed technique on cardboard with signature and date in the lower left corner. On the back of the painting further signature and stamp belonging to the Art Gallery in Milan. Aldo Carpi was born in Milan and was a painter, sculptor and teacher at the Brera Academy. He lived during the revolts of 1898 and took part in the World War I. In 1944 he was deported to Mauthausen and then to Gusen I because he was Jewish. His participation to the historical events of the period was always documented with sketches and drawings. He was a man of faith. He used to paint also more traditional subjects such as landscapes and portraits. He kept a personal and independent style. Presented in frame. 1969.

Aldo Carpi, born in Milan in 1886, was a painter, sculptor and lecturer at the Brera Academy.nHe was first trained in the Milanese studio of the painter Stefano Bersani and later at the Brera Academy, where he was a pupil of Cesare Tallone and Achille Cattaneo.nHe lived as a spectator the experience of the uprisings of 1898, as a soldier in World War I.nAlready in 1927, Carpi made the stained glass windows of the Basilica of San Simpliciano in Milan. In 1930 he was assigned the chair of painting at the Brera and in 1934 he began work on the cartoons for the stained glass window of the Milan Cathedral. In 1937 the painter obtained the Gold Medal at the Universal Exposition in Paris.nIn 1944 he was deported to Mauthausen and then to Gusen I for his Jewish origins: his participation in the historical events of the century was always documented by him with sketches and drawings (even Gusen's Diary) and pervaded his entire pictorial production, always filtered by his gaze of a man of faith.nElected director of the Brera Academy by acclamation, in 1956 the artist received the gold medal for cultural merits from the Municipality of Milan.nCarpi died in Milan in 1973.
