Etching. It is probably the replication of the large and ambitious engraving by Agostino Carracci (more than 5 x 4 metres), consisting of 7 sheets, and the image of a great cartoon invention of Baldassarre Peruzzi built over the years 1522-1523 for Giovanni Battista Bentivoglio. The etching you see here, compared to the original design of the Peruzzi preserved in the British Museum, represents only the central part of the design. It is in four sheets , however, well assembled together and presented in a frame.

Etching (in Latin as aqua fortis) was once used to describe the nitric acid, also called stain. Today it refers to a type of printing and the way to produce it. The etching technique was known since ancient times and was used for engraving decorations on weapons. Some of the first to use it for fine art prints have been Albrecht Dürer in Germany and Parmigianino in Italy.
