Description : Ritratto di gentiluomo
Oil on metal plate. The small, well-executed painting portrays a young man from a wealthy family. You can tell from details in the clothing: the jabot in fine lace, the buttons enriched by gems. On the rear of the painting and on the frame there are hand written labels which attribute the art work to Andrea Appiani (1754-1817), the famous Italian artist considered to be one of the major exponents of the Neoclassical movement and who also was an official portrayist of Napoleon's court. This enscription is signed by "dott. Pensa" and is dated 25-11-1919. There are no other indications to prove this attribution, even though the quality and the style do recall Andrea Appiani's style. The painting is presented in a gilded, revival frame dating early 1900s, which is missing small parts.
