Born in 1880 in Bovolone from a humble Veronese family, Erma Zago enrolled at the Cignaroli Academy in Verona and after graduating became a pupil of Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca, initially dedicating himself to impressions from life, to scenes of popular and everyday life, to portraits,. After moving to Milan in 1901, he participated in all the Brera exhibitions between 1906 and 1925, as well as in various other exhibitions in Northern Italy, establishing himself and specializing in particular in pastel painting. In 1924 he was named honorary member of the Brera Academy. He travels for a long time in Italy and stays for a period in Rome: in this time the passion for photography is born, used both as a medium for painting and as an art in itself. In 1937 he held his first solo exhibition at the Salvetti Art Gallery, with a series of paintings created between Milan, Rome and Venice, which highlight both his thematic variety and his skilful use of colour. Falling ill with tuberculosis, he moved to Liguria, where he continued to paint until his death in 1942.
