In the course of the seventies deepened the investigation on the interiors and the landscape, the themes and subjects that will be recurring in his next production. Considered as a member of the “figuration existential”, the artist has received numerous awards like the premio Feltrinelli in 1984, the exhibition at the Teatro Sociale of Bergamo and the participation in the Venice Biennale in 1986. From 2003, she moved to long periods of stay in Basel and puts a hand to new materials (beeswax, iron wire, copper) always put in the orchestrations paintings that sum up the themes dear to him. The works of Small, have an inside and an outside, and constitute a sort of theatre of apparitions within which we can find objects, drawings, and casts in wax, sculptures, or silhouettes made of wire, tissue paper colored, paper handicrafts. Small achieved in particular by his works, overlapping on the canvas, gauze and acetate, also using industrial colors, in addition to the more traditional oil and tempera, and giving life to images of great visual impact, but also of the unpredictable lightness. The technique of gauze painted, changing the structure of the original works in silhouette without details. As the artist explains: "the double-surface painted – on gauze and in the framework – implies a focus on the part of the viewer, and requires a long time of observation to enter into a relationship with the work. You can stop for a few moments and not allow oneself to be taken only by the need to appear. Go deep is just in relation with our time, but it is the only thing that's left to do is to not be “surfers”, or worse, only of the shadows".
