Oil on canvas. Copy of Guido Reni's painting, today preserved at the Gallery of Palazzo Corsini in Florence. The painting represents the drama of Lucretia's suicide after being violated by Tarquinius. This subject was beloved by the bolognese painter Guido Reni who painted it in diffrent ways; Lucretia's incident is an example of virtue and strenght and it had inspired artists and writers of every era, from Tito Livio to Seneca, from Ovid to Boccaccio and Shakespeare: the Roman community found in the extreme action of the girl the determination to arise, marking with the expulsion of Trquinius the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the republic. Restored and displayed in a gilded and engraved ancient frame.
