Description : Agrippina con le ceneri di Germanico al porto di Brindisi
Oil on canvas. The scene depicts the historical episode told by Tacitus in his Annals: in 20 a.C., the Roman noblewoman Agrippina arrived at the pier of Brindisi with the ashes of her husband, the gallant general Germanicus who died in Antioch of Syria at the peak of his popularity; the noblewoman, accompanied by her youngest children, is welcomed by a huge crowd of friends and veterans. The arrival of the remains of the great leader in Brindisi inspired many anglo-saxon painters from the 18th century, including Benjamin West. The painting requires restorations for some paint losses. It is presented in a gilded coeval frame, from early 19th century.
