Paolo Sala, who belonged to a noble family from the Brianza area and trained in the school of Camillo Boito, became one of the most significant exponents for landscape painting in his time. His production includes many city views of Italian cities (many of Venice) and foreign, as a result of his many travels which in the end brought him to Russia at the court of the Tsar, who he produced many pieces for, becoming a Professor of painting at the Academy of Moscow.
