Additional Information

Style: Louis XIV (1643-1722)

During the reign of the Sun King, France acquired that predominance in the so-called minor arts which it maintained for the following centuries, above all thanks to the impulse given by the King's strong aesthetic sensibility and his desire to use it as a propaganda celebrating the magnificence of the court.
The furniture has baroque features with more classic references.
The Louis XIV furniture is imposing and sumptuous, richly decorated and inlaid in what can be defined as a “contained baroque”.
The materials are precious and the details are very finely crafted.
An internal evolution of the style can be glimpsed, passing from more massive and squared lines to more pronounced curves.
The Boulle workmanship is also typical of this style, named after the same cabinetmaker who excelled in inlays with tortoiseshell and metal.
