Description : La prova della scarpetta
Oil on canvas. The subject is an entertaining genre scene of a dame sitting on the armchair in her room, assisted by her maids, who tries on the shoe that the seller is putting on her foot. This kind of scene, a moment of the daily life of the bourgeoisie, reminds of the scope of Pietro Longhi. The Venetian artist did in painting what Goldoni did in theatre: they took a favourite subject of their art and presented it to the public, describing the small moments of daily domestic or social life with good humour and sometimes irony, but always in a refined way, as they had seen them and objectively noted them, without social prejudice or moralistic intentions. The genre scenes by Longhi, mostly inside, result rich of active and moving figures, and of details who appear insignificant, but which, when highlighted, remind to the viewer the ordinary life that they know well. The painting proposed here shows signs of restoration and recanvassing. There is a title block of an inventory on the back. Coeval frame.
