Apparsa a Riga nel 1785, "La fondazione della Metafisica dei costumi" è intimamente legata, nei temi e nella genesi stessa dell'opera, alla "Critica della Ragion pura". Diviso in tre parti, lo studio kantiano analizza il rapporto tra "libertà" ed etica. Muovendo dal principio secondo il quale l'uomo, per compiere il bene, deve ubbidire rigidamente alle leggi della ragione e negando alla volontà ogni facoltà di scegliere tra bene e male, Kant affronta poi il problema della connessione tra libertà e morale. Ma al termine dell'opera il filosofo deve arrendersi ammettendo l'impossibilità di spiegare in che modo sia possibile la "libertà" in una scelta morale e riconoscendo in questo "il limite estremo di ogni filosofia pratica".
