Description
Group of 12 "manillas" (bracelet coins) of different alloys and decorated with geometrical shapes; they come from a bigger private collection of an important Milanese family. Coming from the sub-Saharan area of West Africa, where they were produced with the dual purpose of corporal decoration and form of hoarding (often nuptial coins) these objects were imported in large quantities by European merchants who bought them at vile prices to sell them by weight.
