Giancarlo Piretti nasce a Bologna nel 1940. Frequenta l'Istituto Statale d'Arte di Bologna, dove ha conseguito il titolo di Insegnante di Disegno. Nel 1960 frequenta l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna. In seguito è docente di Interior Design all'Istituto Statale d'Arte di Bologna per sette anni. Nello stesso periodo lavora come designer d'interni per dodici anni all'Anonima Castelli, progettando le loro linee di mobili per casa, ufficio e collettività, per le quali ha depositato numerosi brevetti d'invenzione industriali e meccanici e modelli ornamentali. Tra i suoi progetti più noti si annoverano PLIA, una sedia pieghevole, PLATONE, un tavolo pieghevole, DSC (106-AXIS), un sistema di sedute per collettività e spazi istituzionali, SISTEMA 61, un sistema modulare di divani. Nel 1971 riceve il premio SMAU e la BIO 5 Distinction alla Biennale di Ljubliana, Slovenia per Plia. Nel 1973 gli viene assegnata, sempre per Plia, la menzione GUTE FORM della Camera di Commercio della Repubblica Federale Tedesca ed una menzione speciale del Governo Britannico. Nel 1971 PLANO vince la medaglia d'oro all'IBD (U.S.A.). Per il sistema di sedute VERTEBRA ottiene, con Emilio Ambasz, nel 1977 la medaglia d'oro dall'IBD (U.S.A.), nel 1979 il premio SMAU e nel 1981 il Compasso d'Oro (Italia). Sempre insieme ad Ambasz, nel 1980 gli viene assegnato il "National Industrial Design Award" (U.S.A.) per LOGOTEC, un sistema d'illuminazione. Nel 1988 Piretti espone al Neocon di Chicago un vasto progetto, la PIRETTI COLLECTION, una serie di sedute per ufficio e collettività che fino ad ora ha contato la vendita di oltre 2,5 milioni di esemplari. Il suo impegno è stato dedicato alla progettazione di tavoli e sedie da ufficio, per i quali ottenne numerosi brevetti d'invenzione ed ornamentali: tavoli pieghevoli, salva spazio, modularità, impilabilità, schienali con doppia articolazione, meccanismo che regola la tensione dello schienale in funzione del peso dell'utente, meccanismo innovativo che regola automaticamente l'assetto e il comfort della seduta.
