Description : "Feste nel giovedì grasso, nei tempi della Repubblica di Venezia"
Etching. Taken from a drawing by Antonio Canaletto, as indicated at the bottom left, the print shows a moment of the Venetian carnival, as the title below explains well. Canaletto was one of the first artists to realize the promotional value of the engraving reproductions of his works; in 1766 he received from Lodovico Furlanetto, an important merchant of prints, the task of executing a series of twelve drawings of the festivals that took place in Venice in the presence of the doge, with the aim of having them engraved by one of the Giambattista Brustolon (1712-1796) from Belluno, the most successful professionals of the time. Canaletto's drawings of exquisite quality describe every detail with meticulous attention: from the buildings to the furnishings, from the boats to the clothes, to the scenographic contexts; Brustolon transfers the magnificent inventions and perfect perspectives of the Venetian master to copper with extraordinary skill and fidelity: the series achieves a remarkable success as demonstrated not only by the many reprints, but also by the numerous paintings, the work of various authors, directly derived from it. The reprint proposed here has some slight gore of humidity. In a stylish frame.
