Description : Studio per Quadro Storico
Oil on paper. On the back is an authentication by his son Ernesto, who also specifies the title; it also has an inventory label. Alcide Davide Campestrini, a painter from Trentino who received his artistic training at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where he also taught, had a vast and varied production, including religious subjects, landscapes, portraits and genre scenes from the end of the 19th century, some military scenes of patriotic intent from the early 20th century, as well as decorations for villas and palaces (especially in Trentino), which the artist worked on after the war. He has been defined as a "wanderer of painting", who has crossed different styles and genres, declining in painting and drawing between neo-impressionism and timid hints of "abstract" figuration, with also incursions into realism and social criticism. The sketch presented is on a historical theme, a figure in a Roman toga, with a lyre at his feet, sitting on a bench, possibly the Emperor Nero. The painting comes in a revival frame.
