The first engraving in the series presents the title and an overall image of the tools used by the various commission agents; the other six engravings depict the individual characters carrying out different activities, carrying out commissions at home: one recognises the letter carrier, the musician, the carpenter.
Etching (in Latin as aqua fortis) was once used to describe the nitric acid, also called stain. Today it refers to a type of printing and the way to produce it. The etching technique was known since ancient times and was used for engraving decorations on weapons. Some of the first to use it for fine art prints have been Albrecht Dürer in Germany and Parmigianino in Italy.
