11 volumes. Contemporary binding in poor condition: full leather binding with gilt friezes and titles on dowels on the backs, very compromised by lacks on the backs and plates, woodworms on the backs, hinges and plates, and cuts on the hinges. The woodworms often, from the hinges and from the plates, have extended their damage also to the guard sheets and to the first and last white cc (in Volume VIII also involved the Planche in the antiporta). Red cuts with traces of dust. The papers of all the volumes are well preserved, with rare blooms and irregular browning involving in a more or less intense way individual notebooks scattered throughout all volumes. We report only in Volume VIII (moreover the most extensively burnished) a thin gora of humidity at the outer margin of the cc from Bb1 to the end of the volume and in Volume II the open ligature at the beginning of Du Contract Social, with also the title page of the partially detached assay (c N1). Small lacks without loss of text in the lower external corners of single cc (Tome II D1; Tome V M4; Tome X H2)

In the Avertissement du Libraire, account is taken of the editorial choices that led to the compilation of the 11 volumes of this "Nouvelle Edition soigneusement revue et corrigée": the same Rousseau consulted directly by the Publisher provides these indications: in the face of a previous edition that came out in Paris by Du Chesne and which also included works not composed personally by Rousseau, the philosopher indicates “n'imprimez que ce que j'ai fait, et c'est par-la précisement que votre Edition sera recherchée”. En consequence je n'ai ajoutée à cette Edition que les pieces auxquelles M. Rousseau a répondu et quelques Lettres qui ne s'y trouvoient pas.
