Description : La morte di San Francesco Saverio
Oil on canvas. Italian school, Roman area of the early eighteenth century. The Saint appears below, half lying on the ground in the countryside, embracing a crucifix, with his gaze turned in contemplation to the skies open above him, in which angels whirl. It is a copy of the Baciccio altarpiece in Sant'Andrea del Quirinale in Rome (1676), of which there is a variant in the church of S. Agostino in Ascoli, but of which three other sketches have also been traced that show the evolution of the composition and interest in the subject. The canvas has several small drops in color and needs restoration.
