Genre scene

Tapestry with genre scene set in the countryside: a young man defends himself with a spear from the assault of a group of stray dogs. The tapestry fabric has several horizontal cuts, especially in the upper half.

Oil on canvas. Eastern European School. Signed Szego G. below. These are two works to be proposed aligned because they depict a boy and a girl lying on the same lawn in a mirrored position, as if facing each other, probably intent on a love game: they wear gypsy clothes and have musical instruments with them - she a tambourine and him a violin - which refer to two characters of Slavic ethnicity, from the gypsy world. The whole is lively and serene. The two works are presented in styled frames.

Glimpse of Paestum

Gouache on cardboard. Signed lower right. The Neapolitan painter Antonio Coppola attended courses at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples. He was a good temperer and executed with ease and with marine effect and views of Naples, with a production sought above all by foreigners and tourists. The foreshortening shows the countryside around the temple of Paestum, with a hay cart and its farmer in the foreground. It is presented in a gilded frame from the end of the 19th century.

Lucerna Lake

Colored lithography. Signed at the bottom left. Jean-Pierre Thènot was a french draftman and incisor that wrote several treatises painting. It shows a glimpse that opens up on the right with a wide lake, probably Lucerna Lake; on the left there is a rustic cottage with figures. It is part of a serie of Swiss landscapes. The lithography comes in a coeval gilded frame.

The lithograph shows a view of a mountain landscape: in the foreground on the right is a chalet offering refreshment to travellers passing along the path. The landscape then sweeps over a large mountain range, presumably the Alps, with a lake between its peaks. The lithograph is part of a series of landscapes of Switzerland. The art work comes in a coeval gilded frame.

Color lithograph. Signed lower left. Jean-Pierre Thénot was a French painter, draftsman and engraver, author of treatises on painting. The lithography offers a landscape view with a wide river on the bank of which stands a castle; in the foreground the scene is animated by figurines of ladies and gentlemen strolling along the path. It probably belongs to the series of reproductions of Swiss landscapes, made by the artist. The work is presented in a contemporary gilded frame.

Pencil on paper. Good use of the hatching and chiaroscuro are shown in this portrait of a young woman. The portrait comes with a 19th century wooden frame that had beeen embellished with leafy and floral leather inserts; the frame has some color drops and some missing parts.

Glimpse of a Church with salesmens 1858

Watercolor on paper. Signed at the bottom right. The charming watercolour depicts a view of the city at the entrance to a church, where street vendors have set up their lively stalls. Few biographical details are known about the Lombard painter Claudio Bernacchi, but his name appears frequently in the second half of the 19th century as a painter and architect in the realisation of works in Milan (such as the Pavilion built in 1857 in Piazza di Loreto on the occasion of the entry into Milan of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife), as well as a teacher of ornamentation at the Brera Academy. The painting is presented in a gilded frame from the end of the 19th century, with some missing pieces.
