Description

Fireplace triptych in gilt bronze and porcelain, turquoise background. The watch has an original spherical body embellished with polychrome enamel inserts with a motif of beads, illuminated with a mythological subject and surmounted by an eagle. The body rests on a quadrangular column embellished with porcelain plaques. The base, with an elongated shape, presents various triumphs and a crowned girl's head in the center. Pair of accompanying candlesticks decorated with polychrome motif of cherubs and festoons of flowers and embellished with numerous enamel inserts with a motif of beads. Small handles in the shape of girls' heads. The lids of the candlesticks are missing.

Product Condition:
Item in good condition, with small signs of wear. Mechanism revised September 2022.

In the homonymous book of the Bible the story of the prophet Daniel is told that King Darius the Medus, deceived by his court rivals jealous of his rank, condemns death and has him thrown into the lions' den. Discovering the deception, the king at dawn the following day hurries back to the pit and finds Daniel alive, who tells how God had sent an angel to shut the lions' jaws, "because I was found blameless in front of him. ". The biblical episode has been depicted many times in art, both pictorial and sculptural, given the strong narrative and educational impact. The painting went to public auction on 25 October 2018 as a "Lombard school of the seventeenth century", but in our opinion it is a later, nineteenth-century work inspired by ancient pictorial ways.

Oil on canvas. Intense and high quality, the painting depicts a monarch of the royal house of Scotland. Around the portrait, in a painted oval frame, there are some writings: the name Rober(t) appears at the top left, the title Rex at the bottom left and the abbreviation Scot, which stands for Scotorum, on the right; the writing at the top right is not identifiable, but it seems to be an acronym. The man portrayed wears a hat and a coat adorned with ermine fur, which is considered the noblest fur, reserved for royalty. He wears a golden pendant around his neck, which depicts two leaves with the fruit of the thistle, which, in heraldry, symbolizes Scotland. The writing and the pendant therefore refer to a Robert of Scotland, probably from the dynasty that reigned in the fourteenth century. The portrait was however executed in the romantic nineteenth-century period, probably using some ancient engravings for inspiration. Restored and relined, it is presented in a frame in style.
