Oil on hardboard. Signed lower left. Painter, sculptor and architect, Carlo Bonomi, after training at the Brera Academy, opened a studio in Milan together with Carlo Carrà, Giannino Castiglioni and Barilli. His painting is characterized by bright colors - yellow, red and burnt - spread with material substance, as if he sensed a third dimension in painting. He has created works of monumental size, full of figures, seen in their everyday life: humble and industrious people, with deep religious and human motivations. He has never forgotten, on the contrary, he has rather exalted his popular extraction. In this work the artist proposes a large countryside landscape where a river flows, perhaps the Ticino of the places inhabited by the artist: unlike many of his other works, the colors, which prefer the ranges of green, yellow and blue, are spread with broad brushstrokes in soft shades, without contrasts. The work is framed.

Additional Information

Artist: Carlo Bonomi (1880-1961)

Born in Turbigo, after studying at the Brera Academy in Milan, Carlo Bonomi opened a studio here together with Carlo Carrà, Giannino Castiglioni and Barilli. Comp^ study trips to Munich and Rome. Volunteer party for the First World War, Bonomi experienced the drama of the soldiers, sent to the massacre and the inhumane conditions of life in the trenches, developing his own personal revolt against the futility of those massacres. After the end of the war he was attracted by plastic works and, neglecting painting, he began to sculpt. He exhibited in numerous Italian exhibitions, achieving success with the public and critics; some of his bronzes were destined for the Monumental Cemetery of Milan. Finally, he also discovered himself as an architect, building himself a house on the hill of Turbigo, in which, upon his death in 1961, his son's museum-gaps gallery was set up.
