Gli Cheyenne attorno al 1700 si trasferirono nelle pianure alte, vivendo in villaggi di "tepee", cacciando il bisonte ed effettuando razzie e spedizioni di guerra, contro i Crow, i Pawnee, gli Shoshoni, gli Ute. Nel 1851 il trattato di Ford Laramie separò i Cheyenne settentrionali da quelli meridionali, una separazione più geografica che reale, ma che contribuì a disgregare la loro struttura tribale. Nel 1876 si unirono ai Sioux per combattere le truppe di George Custer: furono tra i protagonisti nella battaglia di Little Big Horn. La loro fine arrivò con lo sterminio dei bisonti. Confinati in piccole riserve nel Montana del Sud o nell'Oklahoma, resistettero fino allo stremo all'invasione dei bianchi finché i loro capi furono deportati in Florida.
