Description

First edition of Victor Hugo's masterpiece. A lively bibliographic debate has always been underway on this first edition: according to the contract signed by the author, the original edition had to appear simultaneously in Paris, by the publisher Pagnerre, and in Brussels, by Lacroix. According to some evidence, not recognized, however, by all scholars, it seems that the Belgian edition preceded the Parisian edition by a few days (the volumes would be released in Brussels on 30 or 31 March, while in Paris on 3 April). The most important proof of this precedence is provided by a letter from Adèle Hugo, published in 1904 and with presumed date March 31, 1862, in which Adèle writes: “Auguste [Vacquerie] nous apprend que Les Misérables paraissent sous trois jours. Étonnement mêlé de satisfaction. Auguste me raconte qu'ils comptaient faire paraître Les Misérables le 7 avril; que le matin [Noël] Parfait était accouru effaré chez [Paul] Meurice he say qu'il sortit de voir aux mains de [Paul] Siraudin, an exemplaire des Misérables qu'il avait acheté la veille à Brussels ”. Our copy would therefore be part of the first absolute edition of the Miserabili
