There is also a label from the Gussoni Gallery in Milan relating to the personal exhibition of the artist in 1962. Self-taught Milanese artist, Giovan Francesco Gonzaga declared "my true teacher is Nature", and faithful to it, he devoted himself mainly to scenes with horses (a passion inherited from his experience in the Savoia Cavalleria during the war) to landscapes and still lifes , always depicted "en plein air". Vittorio Sgarbi wrote about him: "Giovan Francesco Gonzaga's wisdom lies in the design, which is strong and decisive ..... The images vibrate with restlessness, in the sign of man's struggle against himself, in the hell of a a story that always seems to repeat the same drama. But if the preparatory drawing is admirable, the color of this artist has a regality and a sensitivity that come from a musical perception of the color, where the palette is expressed in sudden, variations and rhythms buttons ". In this composition the color blue dominates, represented in a wide range of shades that define and differentiate the vases, of all different shapes, the candlestick and the backgrounds: the chromatic games create a lively but personal, intimate, and the artist seems to express through the sense of sight, his moods, his inner perceptions of the reality that surrounds him. The painting has two small patches on the back. It is presented in a stylish frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Giovan Francesco Gonzaga (1921-2007)

A Milanese artist descended from a cadet branch of the Gonzaga nobles of Mantua, Giovan Francesco took part in the Second World War with the Savoy Cavalry when he was still twenty years old, participating with the “Fantasma” squadron in patrol actions in the Russian steppe. The months spent in close contact with the horse during the war sparked in him a real passion for horses, which became the privileged subject of numerous paintings, sculptures and poems. Self-taught artist, he declared "Nature is my true teacher", and faithful to it, after horses, he devoted himself mainly to landscapes and still lifes, always depicted "en plein air". In 1955 Giovan Francesco Gonzaga embarked on a journey through Spain, from whose landscape his palette was enriched with new color for his animals. His works earned him several awards, including the Marzotto Prize in 1963, the Golden Peacock in 1967, Le grolle in 1972, a Gold Medal from Pope John Paul II in 1997 and in 2001 he received from the Municipality of Milan the 'Ambrogino d'oro. The artist died in his hometown, Milan on 2 October 2007. His works appear in various museums, including that of the Cavalleria di Pinerolo, the Historical Museum of the Guardia di Finanza in Rome, the Tel Aviv Museum, the Art Museum of Los Angeles, in public and private collections in Italy, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Indonesia, China, Japan, Singapore and America.
