Description

First paperback edition of this three-volume work by Michelangelo Pinto, lavishly illustrated with 306 full-page engravings, chapter headings, and ornate initials. Pinto was the Italian consul, a professor of Italian literature in St. Petersburg, and the owner of the Roman newspaper "Don Pirlone." After the fall of the Roman Republic, Pinto fled to Turin, where he published this work, maintaining the satirical style that had made the Roman newspaper so successful. "Don Pirlone" was a daily newspaper published in 1848 and 1849 following the 1848 uprisings. It immediately achieved enormous success due to its direct language, use of political satire (primarily against the Papacy, France, and Austria), and caricature in its cartoons. It is recognized as one of the most important illustrated satirical newspapers of the Italian Risorgimento.
