Description

A major three-volume work in the history of physics, it translates into French the studies of Pieter van Musschenbroeck (1692–1761), a Dutch physicist and professor in Duisburg, Utrecht, and Leiden, where he held the chair of experimental philosophy and physics. Starting from his study of Newton's theories, Musschenbroeck proposed and described experiments and machines relating to various fields of classical physics. His work was translated into French by the physicist Sigaud de la Fond and published in 1769 by several Parisian publishers. The text is preceded by a dedication to William V, Prince of Orange and Nassau by Musschenbroeck's son, an introduction to the Dutch physicist's work by Jean Lulolfs, and an explanatory text, "Discours sur la meilleure manière de faire les experiments." The text is accompanied by 65 plates (numbered I-LXIV, the XI double: Volume I planches I-XXV, Volume II planches XXVI-XLI, Volume III planches XLII-LXIV) and by a fold-out table in Volume II.
