Description : Paesaggio con fiume e figure
Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Emilio Donnini, a Florentine artist, established himself as a landscape painter from life and marked the transition from a purely romantic interpretation to Macchiaioli realism. He loved to portray especially seascapes rich in romanticism, painting the scenes from life, mostly on his beloved island of Elba. His works are rich in chromaticism with very delicate tones, from a diffuse luminosity that extends from the sky to the surfaces, often water, below with particular brilliance, while the figures that animate the scene are described with rapid brush strokes but at the same time with orderly precision. This landscape view portrays a watercourse in the countryside, crossed by the stump of an ancient bridge; washerwomen are busy with their work on the stony shore. The painting shows traces of restoration. It is presented in a golden frame from the mid-1900s.

Additional Information
Artist: Emilio Donnini (1809-1886)
Born in Florence in 1809, there is no information about Emilio Donnini's pictorial training: his activity is documented in his studio in Florence starting from 1843; a regular visitor to the Caffè Michelangiolo, a meeting place for painters of the Macchiaioli, he regularly participated in the exhibitions organized by the Società Promotrice fiorentina delle Belle Arti, starting from 1845. Donnini was an exclusively landscape painter and is considered as an interpreter of transition between romantic landscape painting and Macchiaioli realism, painted from life, especially of seascapes (his friend Telemaco Signorini defines him as a Marinist) and frequently of beaches on the Island of Elba; but his attendance of the Staggia School starting from 1854, with the Markò family and other artists, led him to paint in the open air also in the Florentine, Mugello and Lazio countryside with a style that referred to the reproduction of the landscape from life. From the early sixties he also began to frequent the Ligurian coast near La Spezia. Donnini died in Florence in 1886.Age: 19th Century / 1801 - 1900

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
