Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. On the back is a cartouche from the Société des Beaux-Arts de Lyon with the title "La bourage en Bugey." Terraire, who lived and worked for many years in Lyon, specialized in mountain landscapes in the southeastern regions of France, including Bugey (a historical and natural region in the Ain department, between Lyon and Geneva). His landscapes feature recurring figures of animals, grazing herds, and farmers going about their work. The work has some old patches visible on the back. It is presented in a contemporary frame, with several missing parts. Cows grazing in Saint Jean de Sixt, in Haute-Savoie, near La Clusaz, a subject in which the artist specialized. His broad, colorful touch is perfectly suited to the sumptuous landscapes he depicts, preferably choosing motifs with a slightly high horizon line to best convey the majesty and grandeur of our Alpine panoramas.

Additional Information

Artist: Clovis Terraire (1858-1931)

Born in Marseille in 1858, Clovis Terraire was a celebrated painter of landscapes, scenes, and still lifes. His early artistic career was a whirlwind of creative endeavors, as he developed an advanced aptitude for both drawing and music. At the age of 20, pursuing his musical interests, he traveled to India with a theater company, where he supposedly performed in an orchestra. The bassoon was his favorite instrument, but he was equally skilled as a pianist. Upon returning from his theatrical sojourn, he settled in Lyon, where he began his artistic training in earnest, studying under Louis Guy (1824-1888). Guy was a versatile teacher with a particular skill in painting animals, a subject that would prove very useful to his student. Terraire painted mainly in southeastern France, in the regions of Haute-Savoie, Dauphiné, Bugey, and Bresse, reproducing landscapes alive with herds and peasant activity. Terraire's mastery was duly rewarded with entry to the prestigious Paris Salon, where he became a regular exhibitor. Terraire also exhibited at the Salon de Lyon and the Salon des Artistes Français, receiving an honorable mention in 1905, a third-class medal in 1908, and winning the Prix Rosa-Bonheur in 1927. He was considered a leading exponent of the "Lyon School." He died in Lyon in 1931.

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas

The oil painting is a painting technique using powder pigments mixed with bases in inert and oils.
