Description : Interno con monaco
Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Inside a study, with thick stone walls and a vaulted ceiling, simple furniture but a bookcase filled with tomes, a monk sits at his work table, inside a manuscript. Jeno Kemendy, a Hungarian painter and set designer, devoted himself primarily to genre scenes, often set in earlier periods than his own historical period. His expertise as a set designer also shines through in this painting, in the attention to detail of the setting and the man's theatrical pose. The work features slight paint loss. It is presented in a period frame.

Additional Information
Artist: Jeno Kemendy (1860-1025)
Born in Transylvania in 1860, Jeno Kemendy studied at the Budapest School of Drawing and, from 1879, worked as a painter in Munich. He first exhibited his paintings in Budapest in 1881. In 1887, he went to Paris to study history painting. In 1888, he exhibited in Munich. His paintings are mostly theater scenes and genre paintings. He sold many paintings and amassed a large fortune at a young age. In 1895, he became stage supervisor of the state theaters (Opera House, National Theater) in Budapest. In 1900, he received a gold medal for his designs for the works of Shakespeare and Molière at the World's Fair in Paris. In 1923, he became a permanent member of the Opera House. He was deeply interested in the scenic issues that were already at the forefront in Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He constantly worked on innovations (for example, a flying structure for The Rhine Treasure), and managed to amaze audiences by making the most of the magnificent stage facilities of the Opera House. From 1916, he also used film projection as a visual element. Kemendy died in Budapest in 1925. Some of his paintings are in the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery.Age: 19th Century / 1801 - 1900

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
