Watercolor on cardboard. Signed and dated lower right. On the back is a scroll with the handwritten inscription "Old Square at Rouen" the date, and a further signature. The view of the square includes a corner from which a street branches off; on the left, in the background, you can see the statue dedicated to Joan of Arc, which stands in what is now the Place de la Pucelle. The work is presented in a late 19th-early 20th-century gilded frame.

Artist: Thomas Colman Dibdin (1810-1893)
Dibdin was born in Betchworth, Surrey, in 1810. He initially worked in a post office. He became an artist at the age of 28 and traveled to France, Germany, and Belgium, painting views and landscapes of the places he visited. He also painted in Gibraltar and India, although these were created in England based on detailed sketches. In 1845, he published a guide to watercolor painting. Dibdin later worked at Sydenham College with his father-in-law. He died in Sydenham in 1893. His paintings can be seen in galleries in London and Sheffield.Age: 19th Century / 1801 - 1900
