A good copy. Leatherette binding with gilt titles on a tag on the spine; the spine also features gilt decorations, a small, partially detached gilt tag, and the mark left by a removed tag. The boards are framed in gilt frames. All decorations are floral. Noteworthy are abrasions to the edges and corners, the boards, and the covers; a cut to the upper portion of the front hinge. Pencil asterisk on the front pastedown. Collational formula: [π]²,*⁸,**⁴,*⁸,1-10⁸,11⁶ (the first and last blank leaves are missing). The leaves are lightly browned with scattered foxing; copious foxing on the first leaves and the last four pages; scattered scribbles in black ink in the margins of the leaves. Minor pencil annotations, almost completely erased, on the first flyleaf. Stamp on the verso of the title page. Two well-preserved folded plates with scattered foxing are included at the end of the volume. Text in German.

Description

The work chronicles a journey through the Balkans in 1789 during the war between the Russians and the Turks. It is described as a fragment from the political and military essays of Major à la Suite Reale Bavarian and Chamberlain Von Gugomos. The title page also states the purpose of the publication: "For the knowledge of the regions of the actual theater of war between the Russians and the Turks on both banks of the lower Danube; together with the correction of various opinions regarding the politics, customs, character, and military organization of the Muslims, and an appendix indicating the outcome of the actual war through the events of the war of 1789." The volume is enriched with an engraving on the frontispiece depicting the Schiumna Mosque, the original plan of the Battle of Foczan in Wallachia, and a particularly detailed plan of that battle, providing a closer look at how the maneuvers against the Turks were conducted.
