Description
Delpech, the author and editor of the work, was born in Paris in 1778 and died in the same city in 1825. He was a French art critic, draftsman, and lithographer, famous for his engraved portraits of historical and contemporary figures of his time. The work consists of 162 lithographed portraits, some embellished with the sitter's signature. The subtitle of the work, translated from the French, specifies that the portraits contained in the volume are: "Portraits of the most illustrious personalities who appeared in France from Francis I (and a few years before) until the end of the reign of Louis XVI." The title page also contains another note: "A chronological table of the portraits will be published at the end of the work." However, this table is missing and was most likely never published.
