Additional Information

Artist: Piero Galanti (1885-1973)

Born in Brescia in 1885, Piero Galanti's passion for painting blossomed at the Moretto School. Despite opposition from his family (who wanted him to work) in his adolescence, he developed a strong interest in the studio of architect Egidio Dabbeni, overcoming the most difficult challenges. To pursue his dream, he applied to Milan as a catalog designer. Despite everything, he exhibited his first works in Brescia in September 1909. During the First World War, he served as an infantryman for sixteen months on Mount Pasubio. Upon returning from the war, he resumed his artistic pursuits and immediately exhibited in 1919 in the Ridotto del Grande in the "First Exhibition of Veteran Artists." His pictorial interests focused on still life, landscapes, and then increasingly on portraiture. He spent a long time on Lake Garda, stopping to admire glimpses of the mountains and the lake. In 1924, in addition to exhibiting at the Turin Quadrennial, he held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Campana, which marked his first success, followed by others. In December 1926, he held a solo exhibition. In 1928, he participated in the first Brescia Triennale, and won the portrait prize at the 1930 Venice Biennale. He exhibited again at the Galleria Campana in 1931 and 1932. In February 1932, he participated in the third exhibition of the Regional Union; the following year (1933), he was present at the Florence Union; in 1934 (with "Convalescence"), he was present at the fifth exhibition of the Interprovincial Union of Lombardy; and in February, he participated in an exhibition in Bergamo. In 1942, he again exhibited at the Venice Biennale. After participating in World War II, he resumed his artistic career, participating in numerous exhibitions throughout the country. His portraits also include those of Pope Pius XI and later of Pope Paul VI. Galanti died in Brescia in 1973.
