Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Cesare Laurenti was a multifaceted artist, highly influential in the history of applied arts in Italy between the 19th and 20th centuries, ranging from easel painting to mural decoration, sculpture, illustration, architecture, engraving, monumental ceramics, restoration, technical experimentation, and the antiques trade. His early work was influenced by Domenico Morelli, whose pupil he was in Naples; some of his rural scenes, featuring shepherdesses and flocks, such as the one presented here, are inspired by a realist taste. His artistic career later shifted toward a more symbolist style, experimenting with various artistic techniques. The work is presented in a period frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Cesare Laurenti (1854-1936)

Born in Mesola (Ferrara) in 1854, Cesare Laurenti studied first in Ferrara and Padua, then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1878, he moved to Naples, where he studied under Domenico Morelli. He returned to Padua and shortly thereafter settled in Venice, where he worked according to the fashion of the time, influenced by Giacomo Favretto. He then moved on to mythological and literary subjects. After winning the prestigious Principe Umberto Prize at the First Triennial Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in 1891 with his canvas The Parche, his style became more metaphorical, ultimately becoming decidedly Symbolist. This was the period of some of his most representative works. During this period, he began to embrace the Art Nouveau style, as evidenced by the large frieze created by the ceramics firm Gregorj of Treviso and titled The Golden Statues. The work was presented at the 1903 Venice Biennale and is now located at the Estense Castle in Mesola. A personal room was also set up for him at the Venice Biennale in 1907. Also in 1907, he was called to serve on the Appeals Commission regarding the reconstruction of the bell tower of San Marco in Venice, which collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt in 1912. Laurenti began to revive the classical Venetian tradition, culminating in the Rialto Fish Market, in collaboration with the architect Domenico Rupolo. However, a monument to Dante Alighieri, which was to have been erected on Monte Mario in Rome, was never built: the project, presented as early as 1911, occupied him until his death in Venice in 1936. Some drawings relating to this project are kept in Ferrara at the Filippo de Pisis Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, together with the painting Eterno enigma, exhibited at the 1932 Venice Biennale.

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas

The oil painting is a painting technique using powder pigments mixed with bases in inert and oils.
