Preparing for the Market

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. The scene shows the old farmer sitting smoking a pipe in the kitchen, in front of the burning fireplace, while he watches amusedly as his grandson tries to use the steelyard. On the floor, baskets of vegetables from their garden are being prepared for sale at the market. The work of the Florentine painter Adolfo Dumini features many similar genre scenes, depicting everyday life with vivacity and cheerfulness, and a wealth of detail. The painting is presented in a contemporary gilded frame.

Oil on canvas. Northern European School, mid-19th century. In a verdant countryside landscape, near the well with its watering trough, several farmers and wayfarers are stopping with their carts, resting, getting water, and washing clothes. Previously restored and relined in antique style, the painting currently shows damage and slight paint loss. It is presented in a beautiful late-19th-century gilded frame.

Oil on canvas. French school, second half of the 19th century. A sealing wax stamp on the back reads 2Atelier Gustave Courbet". The renowned artist (1819-1877) repeatedly depicted woodland scenes with deer and fawns, but the painting presented here cannot be attributed to him. The intensely realistic work depicts a doe and her calf within a clump of trees in the woods, with light filtering through the branches to create luminous effects. The painting is presented in a beautiful 18th-century frame, lacquered and restored.

Sea Glimpse

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. In a stretch of Nordic sea, near a coastline inhabited by a small cluster of houses, a small boat braves the rough sea. The German painter Andreas Dirks made a name for himself with his Nordic seascapes featuring boats at the mercy of rough waters. The painting is presented in a mid-20th-century frame.

Interior with Monk

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Inside a study, with thick stone walls and a vaulted ceiling, simple furniture but a bookcase filled with tomes, a monk sits at his work table, inside a manuscript. Jeno Kemendy, a Hungarian painter and set designer, devoted himself primarily to genre scenes, often set in earlier periods than his own historical period. His expertise as a set designer also shines through in this painting, in the attention to detail of the setting and the man's theatrical pose. The work features slight paint loss. It is presented in a period frame.

Oil on canvas. Signed and located on the lower left margin "Roma, Enrico Scifoni" The name of the sitter is cited at the lower left: "Signorina Maria Ciaffi". Scifoni was a Roman artist who was very active as a portraitist between 1870 and 1914. The young woman portrayed is dressed in a dress and hairstyle reminiscent of the fashions of the Empire period. The painting is presented in a 19th-century gilded frame, which requires restoration.

Wood Landscape with Figures, 1883

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. The landscape depicts a stream flowing through a shady coniferous forest; two boys are fishing with rural tools. The atmosphere is filled with light filtering through the thick, green trees. Tristan Lacroix distinguished himself for his naturalist style of painting and rural realism, which focused on the simple life and landscapes of everyday life. The painting is presented in a contemporary gilded frame.

Oil on canvas. Central European school of the first half of the 19th century. The painting refers to a graphic by Johann Gottfried Haid (1704 -1767), a German engraver known for his mezzotint copies of works by great masters. The original work is probably attributable to Antonio Mercurio Amorosi (1660 -1738), known for his portraits of popular characters in the "childish" style. Our painting presents several small differences from the reference graphic. Still on the first canvas, it is presented in a mid-1900s frame.

Oil on panel. This amateurish work is reminiscent of Guido Reni, who created numerous portraits of the legendary fortune teller, traditionally wearing a turban. The work is presented in a beautiful contemporary gilded wooden frame.

Oil on canvas. Central Italian school, 17th century. The painting depicts the Virgin with the Child Jesus seated on her lap, both wearing crowns. The Child is depicted blessing the viewer, holding a flower in his other hand. The iconography of the Virgin and Child, both crowned, became widespread only from the 16th century onwards, although the theme of the Virgin enthroned was already widespread earlier, as was her Coronation. The painting has been restored and relined in the past. It is presented in an 18th-century wooden frame.

The gentleman, elegantly dressed with a red cape, is portrayed with various objects placed on the desk in front of him—books, a compass, and other drawing tools—indicating his interest in the arts and culture. The painting has been restored and relined in antique style. It is presented in a contemporary lacquered wooden frame.

Oil on canvas. A kneeling Bishop Saint receives Communion from Jesus Christ, descended from Heaven, while an angel holds the Cross and a small cherub holds a devotional candle. The figure of the bishop, which cannot be traced back to a specific figure, may represent the universal Church and its devotion to Christ through participation in the Eucharistic banquet. The painting has been restored and relined in the past. It is presented in a mid-20th-century frame.
