Antique Painting Signed A.J. Franke Oil on Hardboard '800-'900 - Figure of a Scholar in Reading

Oil on canvas. Northern European school, late 19th-early 20th century. In a resting place, a group of soldiers, having laid aside their armor and weapons, are playing dice on a drum, with an elegant gentleman in red challenging them. Thimble painting is an identical version by Robert Alexander Hillingford (1828-1904), a British painter of historical scenes, often depicting military life. The painting has been restored in the past. It is presented in a mid-20th-century frame.

The Announcement of Defeat at Waterloo

Oil painting on canvas. French school of the 19th century. The scene, set in the poor bedroom of an elderly war veteran, who is crying in his bed, sees his family telling him the sad news of the defeat at Waterloo, as can be deduced from the sheet of newspaper in the woman's hands, on which the name of the historic location where Napoleon Bonaparte was definitively defeated. The canvas shows signs of previous restorations, in particular the patch corresponding to the female figure is clearly visible. It is presented in an early 20th century setting.

Oil on panel. Signed lower right. Pietro Scoppetta, an exponent of late 19th-century Neapolitan painting, was deeply influenced by Impressionism, as is evident in this portrait, which focuses entirely on nuanced colors, in the range of browns and contrasting light. The work is presented in an adapted and regilded early 20th-century frame.

Male Portrait 1848

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. A work by the French artist Germain Paget, who created several portraits, mostly of gentlemen from his hometown. The painting has slight paint loss; there are some patches on the back. It is presented in a period frame.

Courtship Scene

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. In the scene, set outside a mountain farmhouse, a young man in traditional costume courts the girl who is drawing water from the fountain, while a little girl watches them curiously. The Chioggia artist Achille Brusamini Naccari painted several genre scenes of popular taste, with figures in traditional costume, as well as costume scenes from Venetian capriccios or portraits. The work is presented in a golden frame from the early 1900s.

Oil on canvas. A simple composition of variegated and multicolored flowers in a vase, with some scattered fruit on the surface. Previously restored and relined, the painting is presented in an 18th-century repainted frame.

Oil on canvas. It probably depicts a tragic anti-Semitic event. On the right, a wounded soldier in Russian uniform is witnessing the dramatic scene of a slaughtered family while the rabbi is preying for them. The broken window and the upside down drawers make clear that the killers broke into the house. On the left of the mirror, there is a Jewish writing that may suggest the location. The word may be translated as 'Ciro' and may be referring to the areas of Georgia and Azerbaijan near the Kura (river flowing from Turkey to the Caspian Sea, known as 'Ciro' in 1800s). The painting, restored and relined, is presented in a frame of the 1800s.

The background is a garden, with a sky fading into the light of the distant sunset. The painting shows signs of previous restoration and relining. On the beach, the fisherman, having pulled his boat ashore and rolled up the sails, which his companion carries on her shoulders, is offering his fresh catch to a woman equipped with a unique water transport and accompanied by a child. The work is naturalistic and realistic, offering a glimpse of rural life rich in detail and particulars, both in the figures and in the landscape and surrounding elements on the beach. It is presented in a period frame.

In the scene, set on a barren, snow-covered plain with a frozen river flowing through it, a large horse-drawn sleigh is parked on the bank, carrying several people: a woman with a child in her arms is preparing to climb aboard, watched by the driver, while another female figure, holding her child by the hand, walks away across the ice. It looks like a Nordic public transport stop! The work is presented in a late-19th-century frame, which has several missing or damaged parts.

Reading the Letter
