Study of Heads

Pencil on paper. Signed lower right. Following an initial academic phase, Neapolitan painter Domenico Morelli, following his contact with the Macchiaioli and his friendship with Filippo and Giuseppe Palizzi, gradually adopted a freer style, especially in his use of color, creating his own signature style that harmoniously blends verism and late romanticism with neo-17th-century influences. An active patriot, he painted everything from historical subjects to genre scenes, dabbled in Orientalism, and then moved on to religious painting. Presented here are studies of two heads with evident Oriental features. Framed in period style.

Oil on canvas. A simple composition of variegated and multicolored flowers in a vase, with some scattered fruit on the surface. Previously restored and relined, the painting is presented in an 18th-century repainted frame.

Old Square in Rouen, France, 1866

Watercolor on cardboard. Signed and dated lower right. On the back is a scroll with the handwritten inscription "Old Square at Rouen" the date, and a further signature. The view of the square includes a corner from which a street branches off; on the left, in the background, you can see the statue dedicated to Joan of Arc, which stands in what is now the Place de la Pucelle. The work is presented in a late 19th-early 20th-century gilded frame.

The painting, according to nineteenth-century taste, aims to propose more of a genre scene than a landscape: in the foreground, in a barren countryside landscape with traces of snow, the figures of a small family descending from a sort of sleigh stand out. made of wood, filled with straw and pulled by a horse. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a gilded wooden frame in style, with several defects.

Oil on panel. Under a pink sky tinged with sunset, on the rocky shores near a village, several figures await the returning fishermen's boats, while other villagers pass by on the path, lingering in conversation. The work is presented in a late 19th-century gilded frame.

Oil on panel. A striking nighttime view of a flat landscape with a small body of water. A farmer rides along the dirt road that runs alongside it, carrying his full baskets, while further back, several herdsmen guide their animals, urging them to stay on the path. Above, the full moon emerges from the clouds, illuminating the landscape. The work is presented in an early 20th-century gilded frame.

Oil on canvas. Signed WV Tippel and dated '86 on the lower left. It harks back to an English artist by whom another English farm scene is known. In this flat, verdant landscape, a stream flows in the foreground, crossed by a small stone bridge over which several cows, followed by a shepherd boy, pass. On the left, emerging from behind the trees, stands a tall Gothic-style building with tall windows, likely a country church. The work is presented in a contemporary frame, which requires restoration.

Interior Scene with Figures

Mixed media on paper. Signed in pencil on the back. Pietro Michis specialized in genre scenes, often in "historical" or antique-style settings, such as this curious and amusing scene: in her room, a lady, assisted by her nurse or lady-in-waiting, is attempting to write a letter, with fragments scattered on the floor indicating her unsatisfactory attempts, while behind the screen, the letter's recipient's servant waits, yawning. The work is presented in a period frame.

Oil on canvas. Tasty depiction of popular life with caricature-like figures: three full-length commoners are depicted on the street while they converse intensely with each other, exchanging confidences or... gossip! Unsigned, the painting requires restoration due to a tear at the bottom.

Oil on canvas. Northern Italian school of the 19th century. The landscape depicts a wide countryside that opens onto the Alpine mountain range, preceded by the gentler pre-Alpine hill slopes; on the central path, which runs straight and perpendicular to the reliefs, a commoner is passing with his mule. The atmosphere is that of the end of the day, with pink shades illuminating the snow-capped peak. A very similar subject can be found in the production of the circle of Carlo Canella (1800 -1879), the Veronese artist known above all for his city views. The work is presented in a late 19th-century frame.

In the foreground, the faces of two popular characters who seem caricatured, perhaps characters in a theatrical performance: it seems the scene of a satirical courtship, with the man who looks lasciviously at the woman, certainly not young and attractive, who is holding a bunch of flowers with an expression between resigned and confused. The painting is presented in a frame from the early 1900s.
