Additional Information

Notes historical bibliographic

Lino Sabattini (born September 23, 1925, in Correggio, Italy, and died July 2016) was an Italian goldsmith and designer. Sabattini was self-taught: as a teenager, during World War II, while working in a copper factory, he began to develop an interest in metals. He developed an interest in metallurgy, but especially in the materials and techniques of goldsmithing. Sabattini then began an informal ceramics apprenticeship with Roland Hettner, a German ceramist who had taken refuge in Italy. In 1955, at the age of thirty, he moved to Milan, where he opened his own metalworking workshop and met Gio Ponti, who encouraged his design work, wrote an article about him in Domus magazine, and exhibited his creations the following year in Paris, which brought Sabattini to international attention. From 1956 to 1963, while still working in Milan, he was design director for Christofle Paris. His signature can be found on elegant everyday objects such as candlesticks, cutlery, kettles, and vases, whose innovative aesthetic tends to fuse neoclassicism, modernism, and minimalism. He also designed glassware and ceramics for Rosenthal, Nava, and Zani & Zani. In 1964, he founded his own factory, Argenteria Sabattini, in Bregnano, near Como. A member of the ADI, he participated in the Milan Triennale and won several awards, including the gold medal in 1971 and the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 at the International Furniture Exhibition in Monza. His works are part of the collections of several museums dedicated to the decorative arts, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
