S. Lucia Flower Market

Oil on the table. Signed lower right. On the back the title in pencil. It is a lively and intense glimpse of the Pallonetto di S. Lucia, the well-known Neapolitan terraced alley which, together with those of San Liborio and Santa Chiara, constitutes the three Pallonetti of Naples; striking and peculiar the contrasts of lights and colors Oscar Ricciardi was a prolific Neapolitan painter considered by some to be the head of Neapolitan Impressionism; he painted as main subjects marine, beaches, glimpses, landscapes and Neapolitan customs and traditions of his city. In his works the intense chromatism, the study from life, the abandonment of drawing and the limpid and clear light that pervades the scenes, reveal the knowledge of Impressionism, due to the presence in Naples of Giuseppe De Nittis. The painting is presented in a gilded frame from the early 1900s.

Pierluigi Rolando Sculpture Mixed Technique Contemporary

Citadel 2001

Mixed technique sculpture: iron, wood and photographs. Pierluigi Rolando, an internationally renowned designer, graduated in textile engineering and established himself primarily in the cashmere textile industry in the family business, he creates garments that he himself defines as “cashmere sculptures modelled on the human body”. At the beginning of the 1970s, he switched to design with collections for active sports and he contributed to the birth of Fila. In his free time, he alternates his sculptural interests with pictorial interests; he makes up figures in expanded polystyrene and collages in wood, cardboard and various materials. However, sculpture has always been his great passion: for forty years, art has been "lived hysterically in the spare time", but since 1993, Rolando has chosen to devote himself entirely to it. Using different materials such as terracotta, recycled iron, wood, he proposes various subjects, with grotesque faces with tense and suffering expressions, strong and caricatured hands, symbols of ancient and heroic deeds from a distant era, with characters of religions and mythology. His visionary universe is populated by warriors, leaders and emperors, horse-totems and imaginary creatures; his art is suggestive, fairy-tale, enchanted. The citadel presented here, which well expresses this passion for mixing very different materials, was created after the tragic collapse of the Twin Towers in New York, in September 2001: the two towers, a symbol of modernity, still stand intact inside a twisted metal plate of decline and decay, created through a twisted metal plate. The sculpture is presented in a plexiglass case.

Oil painting on canvas. Nineteenth century. A suggestive glimpse of the Venice lagoon, with fishing boats with lively sails in the center, and in the background the profile of the city on which the bell tower of the basilica of San Marco stands out on the right. The subject for the colors and the warm atmospheres, the sharpness and the minute description of the details, recalls some works of the painter Antonietta Brandeis (1848-1926), a well-known Ukrainian landscape painter who studied art in Venice and was the author of paintings with detailed architectural glimpses of Italian cities. Not attributable to her (who usually signed her works), but refers to an equally effective contemporary author. The painting is presented in a frame from the early 1900s.

Venetian glimpse

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Painter, sculptor and ceramist, the Turin artist Giovanni Riva participated in numerous national reviews and exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1940 and 1942. Among his production as a ceramist, the faces of many Lenci dolls are particularly remembered. In painting he devoted himself above all to glimpses of Turin, Milan and Venice, rendered with great spontaneity and immediacy, as well as genre scenes. The systematic study of ancient art, the adherence to the Renaissance ideals of the sculpture of Donatello, Michelangelo and Giambologna pushed Giovanni Riva towards the adoption of an expressive code similar to the taste of the romantic nineteenth century, rather than to futurist dynamism or surrealist visions . The Venetian glimpse proposed here is presented in a style frame.

View of the Imperial Forums of Rome

Oil painting on canvas. The wide view of the Imperial Forums of Rome is part of the vast landscape production of the Grand Tour period, intended for wealthy European aristocrats traveling to Europe - and in particular in Italy, where Rome was considered a must - who wanted a souvenir of the places visited. The Roman Imperial Forums are an architectural complex consisting of a series of monumental buildings and squares, the center of political activity in ancient Rome, built over a period of about 150 years, between 46 BC. and 113 A.D. Despite the enlargements, the fires, the restorations and the reconstructions, during the Antiquity the Imperial Forums kept intact both their architectural conformation and their function. Their almost definitive destruction occurred during the Renaissance at the hands of Pope Julius II (1503-1513), who used the whole area as a quarry for materials to be reused in the building and artistic renovation of the city he initiated. The protests of leading artists such as Raphael and Michelangelo were of little use. In the following centuries various excavation campaigns were undertaken, with greater vigor starting from the nineteenth century, but the area was completely excavated at the beginning of the twentieth century and the ancient architecture was almost completely erased to make room for the construction of via dei Fori Imperiali , which connects Piazza Venezia with the Colosseum. The Forum was rediscovered starting from the sixteenth century also thanks to the Roman view painters who at that time loved to paint the ruins emerging in the pasture area. The view proposed here presents the Imperial Forums before the excavations begun in the nineteenth century, when the road that still crosses them had not yet been built: they are still surrounded by green countryside and the Roman hills stand out in the background. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a re-adapted 19th century frame.
