A biography of the Bulgarian lawyer (1894-1973). Pt. 1 (pp. 17-170), "Il fascismo", discusses Peshev's political career and vacillating attitudes under the authoritarian rule of King Boris. Peshev (from 1938 a member of the governing majority and deputy head of parliament) agreed to the alliance of Bulgaria with Nazi Germany, and accepted silently the enactment of the Racial Laws (1941). But in March 1943 Jewish friends warned him about the imminent deportation of thousands of Bulgarian Jews by the Commissariat for Jewish Affairs - a branch of the executive, which had already arranged the deportation of Jews from Thrace and Macedonia. He presented to the executive a letter of protest, signed by 42 other parliamentarians. His initiative gained the broad support of public opinion, the media, and the Orthodox Church, causing King Boris to cancel the deportations. Nevertheless, 7,000 Jews from Macedonia and 4,000 from Thrace were deported before Peshev's initiative could take effect.
