Non passa settimana senza che sui giornali italiani, e stranieri, compaia un disegno di Saul Steinberg, così che gran parte dei lettori conoscono perfettamente il suo lavoro ma quasi mai il suo nome. Steinberg è un illustratore, uno dei più grandi, e tuttavia vige la convinzione che un illustratore sia meno di un artista: un artista incompiuto. Se poi il disegnatore lavora per quotidiani o riviste, il suo lavoro non è troppo considerato: vive sui margini dell'arte. Il nome di Saul Steinberg non figura in nessuna storia dell'arte. Questo numero di "Riga" vuole colmare dunque una eclatante lacuna, proponendo di leggere l'opera di Steinberg all'interno della storia dell'arte del Novecento, alla stregua di un suo significativo capitolo.
