Nome centrale nella storia dell'arte contemporanea, Alberto Burri (1915-1995) si dedica al teatro in rarissime occasioni. Il suo debutto nel campo della scenografia avviene per il Teatro alla Scala, con i bozzetti e i figurini per il balletto "Spirituals per orchestra" di Morton Gould (1963). I temi biblici dell'opera (la sofferenza di Cristo, la pietà della Vergine, la redenzione della peccatrice) risuonano nei ritmi astratti della coreografia e nei fortissimi contrasti cromatici pensati da Burri: i lampi del rosso e del nero accostati al fondo materico.

Era domenica 2 ottobre 1966, partiva così la storia di uno dei più fortunati sketch radiofonici che fecero la fortuna dell'ascoltatissimo Gran Varietà della domenica mattina: il caustico, impietoso e coloritissimo battibecco tra un marito e una moglie sempre sull'orlo di una crisi irreversibile, che provoca il continuo ritorno di lei a casa della madre e l'inevitabile rappacificazione col rientro sotto il tetto coniugale. Come scrive Dario Salvatori nella premessa al volume, "Stoppa-Morelli incarnano il disfacimento della coppia borghese. La famiglia allargata ancora non esisteva e le separazioni erano sconsigliate per motivi di decoro. In compenso esisteva già la doppia casa. Riferimenti non casuali, visto che nella vita i due inarrivabili attori rimasero insieme per quarant'anni, senza sposarsi, evitando persino di dividere lo stesso appartamento...". Dietro questi testi esilaranti, la penna di un autore di prim'ordine, cui si devono tantissimi lavori anche per la televisione e il teatro, e l'ideazione, insieme ad Antonio Amurri, dello stesso Gran Varietà. A far rivivere il ricordo di quella popolarissima rubrica, e a farla scoprire al pubblico più giovane che oggi tanto si appassiona all'umorismo via radio di Fiorello o del Ruggito del coniglio, arriva in libreria questo cofanetto, che alla raccolta integrale dei testi affianca un cd con le registrazioni di tutte le puntate andate in onda fino al marzo del 1974.

The Art of the Nasty reproduces almost 450 pre-certificate video covers in all their lurid glory, from the ludicrous and extreme imagery of SS Experiment Camp and the gross savagery of Cannibal Holocaust to the powerful and confrontational image of a rape victim used to promote I Spit on Your Grave.

Covering the whole gamut of pre-certificate video sleeves, from the 'Official' 39 nasties which were found obscene by the Director of Public Prosecutions through to sleaze epics like Killer Nun and Violation of the Bitch, The Art of the Nasty is an invaluable visual record of a time the mainstream video industry would like to forget.
