Secondo un'antica leggenda cinese, il Signore Buddha, nel dipartirsi dalla Terra, chiamò a sé tutti gli animali. Soltanto dodici di essi si presentarono per dirgli addio, ed egli diede a ciascun anno il nome di uno di essi, nell'ordine in cui erano giunti. Ognuno di questi anni ha una durata quintupla rispetto ai nostri, poiché il computo dei cicli mensili e annuali in Oriente è basato sulla Luna. Questo determina un sistema astronomico e astrologico completamente diverso da quello occidentale. Il calendario lunare cinese, che è il più antico della storia (ebbe inizio nel 2637 a.C.), suddivide il tempo in cicli di 60 anni, ciascuno dei quali è ripartito in 12 cicli quinquennali. Ogni segno si combina con i cinque elementi fondamentali e con la polarità Yin e Yang (positivo e negativo) che domina tutto il pensiero cinese e buddhista. I dodici Rami della Terra, inoltre, presiedono anche ai mesi, in maniera simile ai nostri segni zodiacali. Questo volume descrive e spiega in modo chiaro e completo tutta la struttura zodiacale cinese, esaminando le caratteristiche generali della ruota astrologica e gli aspetti particolari di ciascun segno, cui è dedicato ampio spazio. Uno studio dettagliato sui rapporti interpersonali e affettivi dei nati di ciascun Ramo della Terra presenta tutte le possibili combinazioni matrimoniali tra i nati nei vari segni, mentre un confronto tra i sistemi astrologici orientale e occidentale, li rivela mirabilmente complementari e reciprocamente chiarificatori.
